One of the world’s ancient professions, tailoring has a rich history in Europe that goes back to at least the early Middle Ages. As time progressed, tailors became more specialized and more skilled, with tailoring centers popping up around Europe. One of the most prestigious of these was in the Mayfair area of London, on a street known as Savile Row.

Savile Row itself has been around since the 1700s, but its association with tailoring dates to the 1840s when Henry Poole, son of legendary British tailor James Poole, moved the family’s tailoring operation to the street. Known as the “Father of Savile Row,” Poole had showrooms and workshops that drew London’s most elegant people, and new competition from other tailors.

Since then, the street has been home to some of the most famous tailors in history. Meanwhile the “Savile Row” name has become associated with exquisite tailoring, and today refers to the specific type of bespoke tailoring found in this area of London.
